  Background
Abstract As a complex network consisting of sensing, processing and communication, wireless sensor network is driven by various applications and highly requires new QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees. However, unlike traditional Internet, its unique characteristics have brought unprecedented challenges in the area of QoS research. First a hierarchical description (user level, network level and node level) and a comprehensive specification for QoS parameters are presented in this paper. Then the mapping relationship between QoS parameters is carefully analyzed. Finally, a hierarchical QoS architecture is proposed for systemic QoS support in wireless sensor networks.

Background In recent years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have received much attention from both academia and industry. Although a lot of works have been done on WSNs, such as architecture, protocol design, and energy efficiency, Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee for the whole system is still not well investigated. The unique characteristics of WSNs, e.g., extreme resource constraint, have brought unprecedented challenges in the area of QoS research. This paper presentes a hierarchical description for QoS parameters and a hierarchical QoS architecture, which provides a systemic QoS support solution for WSNs.
The work is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High-Tech Research and Development Plan, the National Grand Fundamental Research 973 Program and Program of the Ministry of China for New Century Excellent Talents. The whole project aims to solve some important QoS questions in WSNs, such as QoS routing, and then provide a practical QoS support architecture for WSNs. This paper is the main part of architecture-related research.
The group has been doing research in the QoS support of computer network for many years. Since 2002, they have published the first Chinese survey paper in China, and some high-quality papers related to protocol design and analysis in international conference and journals (includes IEEE SECON, IEEE MASS, IEEE IPCCC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE ICC and IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communication).
