| Abstract & Background | Abstract The research on streaming media coding and transmission technology which is real-time and robust, has become a hotspot in current information technology. As a method of solving this problem, multiple description coding (MDC) is concerned widely, due to satisfy the requirement of real-time data transmission and reduce data distortion. This paper firstly introduces the history of MDC and its factors for evaluating performance. Then, it elaborates the research and progress of MDC, including the ideas, frames and characteristics of various kinds of MDC methods. Finally, it discusses the difficult problems on this area. keywords multiple description coding(MDC); information redundancy; reconstruction; rate distortion; scalable coding background This work belongs to the project "Studies on the Methods of Multiple Description Image Coding", supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China(Nos.60572104, 60533030),Beijing Natural Science Foundation(Nos.40410031, 4061001) and Beijing Key Laboratory Foundation of Multimedia and Intelligent Software Technology. The aim of this project is to research on the techniques of multiple description image coding, develop a new and efficient network coding system which can be adapt to various kinds of dynamically changed situations, and realize the methods of multiple description image coding which can achieve high image coding efficiency and robust data transmission, according to the characteristics of streaming media services on the network. In the past years, the authors have engaged in the many researches on multiple description coding. Their previous work on this area has been published or accepted by some famous journals and international conferences, such as Acta Automatica Sinica and Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia. Among them, a new multiple description image coding scheme using directional lifting-based wavelet transform has been proposed. The first author has concentrated on the study of multiple description coding. Based on a lot of papers related to multiple description coding, this paper elaborates the research and progress of multiple description coding, including the ideas, frames and characteristics of various kinds of multiple description coding methods, and discusses the difficult problems on this area. |
